Ah, 2020.. It seems like just yesterday we were shopping for stuff we don’t need at Target, drinking with friends and prepping for March Madness brackets.
How businesses have been affected by the coronavirus though, is unprecedented. To you, your business is the most essential asset that you have. To the coronavirus, not so much. Being deemed a “non-essential business” means having to shrink down to a skeleton staff, cut hours or temporarily close for tens of thousands of businesses around the nation.
If you’ve got lots of extra time (we know we do) or have transitioned to a home-office lifestyle, here are some helpful tips to keep building your business from home.
What you do today will determine what your business will look like in the next 60 to 90 days. So let’s get to it!
Tidy Up Your Work Environment
Everyone is using the coronavirus as an opportunity to disinfect. But when was the last time you gave your business a true deep clean? Whether it’s your home office or storefront, use this downtime to clean all the nooks and crannies and throw out useless junk.
Get Your Business Organized
Straighten up your accounting department (aka that shoe box full of receipts) organize your stock room or desk. Even if you’ve had to switch to building your business from home, knowing that you have an organized space to work from will give you peace of mind in this crazy time. Plus, you have to be prepared for all your customers to come flooding back!
Reflect & Refocus
While social distancing, take time for some refection. Where do you want your business to be in the next 3-5 years? Is your business where you thought it would be at this point in time? Why did you start in the first place? Use this time to refocus and really drive your passion home so you can reach all your goals when things get back to normal.

Strengthen Your Online Presence
People need to see and hear from you. Your customers. Your staff. Your loved ones. A great way to build your business from home is to dust off those old social media accounts (When's the last time you logged into your Twitter?) and make sure you’re putting out the message that you want your business to be sending. Remind people of how awesome your business is and that you’re there for your community.
Revamp Your Online Shop
Use our guide to writing better sales copy to drive more traffic to your website. If you don’t have one yet, this is a fairly easy thing to do while working from home. There’s not much else to do these days so if you haven’t already, launch your business into the digital age!
Learn a New Skill
If you're practicing social distancing but want to utilize this time to build your business from home, there is no better time to hunker down and sharpen your skills. Tons of pros are giving out free lessons that can help you expand your skillset and make you a more dynamic business owner.
Most importantly, remember that we’re all in this together. We need small businesses like yours to not only survive the pandemic but thrive in spite of it.
